June 21, 2012 -- The IAUP Board of Directors is saddened to report the death of Dr. J. Michael Adams, President of the International Association of University Presidents.   Adams was diagnosed in the fall with a rare blood disorder known as Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS).  In February, he underwent a bone marrow transplant, which failed to cure the disease.  He was subsequently diagnosed with a cancer known as Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), to which he succumbed early this morning.

WISE-Education-Leadership-3rd Sixth WISE Education Leadership Program

The sixth WISE Education Leadership Program will take place in Doha, Qatar November 4 – 6, 2014. The deadline was this past June although late applications may still be considered.

The WISE Education Leadership Program was launched at the Qatar Foundation’s inaugural World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) in 2009 to support current and emerging leaders in higher education around the world. 

This three-day workshop aims to help prepare the next generation of global higher education leaders to manage the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. 
The goals of the WISE Education Leadership Program are to develop the leadership and administrative skill sets of new university presidents and serve as an enabling environment for change and development. The WISE Education Leadership Program will provide experience-based training through case studies, workshops, expert speakers and role-playing exercises. 

Key topics that will be covered during the WISE Education Leadership Program include:

  • Best Practices in Institutional Management
  • Principles of Leadership and Variety of Academic Leadership Styles
  • Institutional and Personal Agendas/Goals
  • Coaching and Team Building
  • Decision Making
  • Working with Governing and Advisory Boards
  • Managing Academic Personnel and Resources

Participation in the WISE Education Leadership Program is free of charge. The Qatar Foundation will also provide round-trip airfare to Doha, hotel accommodations, local transport, meals and conference materials. 

The WISE Education Leadership Program is being organized by the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), the Institute of International Education (IIE), and UNESCO.


Presidents, vice-chancellors, and other heads of tertiary education institutions appointed to the current position after January 1, 2013 are eligible to apply to the sixth WISE Education Leadership Program that will take place in Doha from October 7 - 10, 2012.

The Academic Summits are exclusive "think tank" format events designed to inform global university leaders, especially Presidents, Provost, Deans, Chief Information Officers, about new developments in academic technologies, and focus their attention on critical emerging challenges.

Bogota-2012 IAUP in Bogota for Semi-Annual Meeting

Hosted by Dr. Carlos Felipe Escobar Roa, Rector of Universidad El Bosque (Colombia), and Chaired by Professor Neal King, Secretary General of the IAUP and President of the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology (USA), the second Semi-Annual meeting of the 2011-14 Triennium convened in Bogota, Colombia, from March 23 to 25, 2012.

The meeting, attended by several dozen rectors, presidents, vice chancellors, and guests, was organized around the theme of “voices of reform in higher education” and featured presentations and discussions of major reform efforts in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.  Dr. Escobar set the tone for these discussions with a welcome address that highlighted the many voices – of students, families, businesses, governments, and the universities themselves – that inform the past, present, and future of higher education.

Young-Seek-Choue-172 Dr. Young Seek Choue

Dr. Young Seek Choue, President-Emeritus of IAUP and Founder and Chancellor of Kyung Hee University System, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 18.  We shall always remember Dr. Choue for his great knowledge and untiring life-long dedication to education and the peace movement.
