IAUP President Neal King participates in the Education for Global Citizenship Symposium 2013
Puerto RicoIAUP President and Sofia University (USA) President Dr. Neal King served as a keynote presenter at the Education for Global Citizenship Symposium (Simposio Educación para la Ciudadanía Global) held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
A standing room only crowd gathered at the 2013 ACE Annual meeting in Washington DC on March 2 for a panel discussion titled Global Engagement: The View from Latin America. Co-sponsored by the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) and the ACE Center for Internationalization and Global Engagement, the program featured university presidents from Mexico, Brazil, and Chile, who discussed their internationalization strategies and responded to questions from the audience.
On January 8, 2013, a delegation from J. F. Oberlin University, headed by its Chancellor, Dr. Toyoshi Satow, who also is President-Elect of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon at UN Headquarters and presented him with a copy of Pathway to Peace, a new book on disarmament issues.
The International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) has been invited to join the new Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group for the President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Chaired by the President of ECOSOC, this high level group is the first of its type, giving IAUP a unique opportunity to help increase and enhance the impact of civil society on policy outcomes within the UN system.
The 2012 World Innovation Summit for Education – WISE – will take place from 13-15 November, 2012. Some 1,200 thought leaders and decision-makers will attend including Barham Madain, chair of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), who spoke to University World News about collaboration in higher education.
IAUP Conference: “Building Bridges through Education”
University of Applied Science Upper AustriaThe University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, the University of Education Upper Austria and the Caucasus University, Georgia co-sponsored the conference “Building Bridges Through Education” with UNAI to actively demonstrate the importance of promoting intercultural competencies in educational and social service institutions as well as businesses. The conference was held in Linz, Upper Austria from the 19th – 21st of November 2012.
IAUP President Neal King joined an international panel of inter-faith dialogue scholars, including Deepak Chopra, author of more than 65 books, for a seminar on Faith, Dialogue and Integration on November 26, 2012. Organized by the United Nations Academic Impact program at UN Headquarters in New York City, the seminar is part of an ongoing series dedicated to unlearning intolerance and promoting mutual understanding among cultures and civilizations.
Newly appointed university presidents, rectors, and vice chancellors from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East gathered in Doha, Qatar, from October 6-10, for the third annual WISE Program for Education Leadership. Developed in partnership with the Institute for International Education (IIE), with cooperation from the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), the program was generously sponsored by the Qatar Foundation for Science, Technology and Education as part of its WISE initiative.
Hosted by Dr. Kakha Shengelia, President of Caucasus University (Georgia), and Chaired by Dr. Neal King, President of the IAUP and President of Sofia University (USA), the third Semi-Annual meeting of the 2011-14 Triennium convened in Tbilisi, Georgia from October 12 to 14, 2012.
IAUP President Dr. Neal King was invited to meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during a recent visit to New York. Dr. King was appointed President of IAUP by its Board after the untimely death of former IAUP President, Dr. J. Michael Adams.
July 2, 2012 – IAUP was honored to have been included as a part of the private service for Michael Adams at Fairleigh Dickinson University this past weekend. IAUP Secretary General Neal King was invited by the family to speak on behalf of IAUP immediately following the remarks of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Jim Roach, Rich Bronson, Ramu Damodaran and Ken Brier also were present.
IAUP is pleased to present a new leadership team which will guide the organization through the current presidency which ends in 2014. The team consists of Dr. Neal King (President), Dr. Jason Scorza (Secretary General), Dr. Carmen Lamagna (Treasurer), and Ling Lam (Deputy Secretary General). Dr. King was chosen by the IAUP Board of Directors to succeed Dr. Michael Adams as IAUP President, who passed away in June following a long illness.
June 21, 2012 -- The IAUP Board of Directors is saddened to report the death of Dr. J. Michael Adams, President of the International Association of University Presidents. Adams was diagnosed in the fall with a rare blood disorder known as Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). In February, he underwent a bone marrow transplant, which failed to cure the disease. He was subsequently diagnosed with a cancer known as Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), to which he succumbed early this morning.
The sixth WISE Education Leadership Program will take place in Doha, Qatar November 4 – 6, 2014. The deadline was this past June although late applications may still be considered.
As part of a major effort to identify innovative and cost-sensitive technology solutions for university’s around the world, the IAUP-Microsoft Academic Summit was held in the Microsoft corporate office in Washington D.C. on April 18 & 19, 2012.
